Top 10 Reasons For Epoxy Floor Failure

Epoxy floors can be a durable and attractive option for various spaces. It is a top choice for many healthcare, process and manufacturing facilities. However, with all of epoxy floors beauty, benefits and durability, they can fail for several key reasons. SRI has decades of experience with new epoxy floor installations. However we have considerable experience, repairing or replacing epoxy floors, installed by others. We wanted to put together a simple 10 point list of the most common epoxy floor failures.

  1. Poor Surface Preparation: Inadequate cleaning or improper surface preparation can lead to poor adhesion, causing the epoxy to peel or delaminate.

  2. Moisture Issues: High moisture levels in the concrete can prevent proper curing and adhesion of the epoxy. This can lead to bubbling or peeling.

  3. Incorrect Mixing: Failing to correctly mix the epoxy resin and hardener can result in inadequate curing, leading to a weak and unstable floor.

  4. Temperature Fluctuations: Applying epoxy in unsuitable temperature conditions can affect its curing process. Too cold or too hot can lead to improper hardness and durability.

  5. Heavy Traffic: Epoxy floors may not withstand heavy loads or traffic if they are not formulated for such conditions, leading to cracks or abrasions.

  6. Chemical Exposure: Epoxy can be sensitive to certain chemicals. Exposure to harsh chemicals without proper protection can lead to degradation and failure.

  7. Inadequate Thickness: Applying a thin layer of epoxy may not provide the necessary durability. Insufficient thickness can lead to wear and tear over time.

  8. Improper Application Technique: Using the wrong tools or techniques can lead to uneven application, leading to weak spots and premature failure.

  9. Lack of Maintenance: Neglecting regular cleaning and maintenance can lead to dirt accumulation and wear, compromising the integrity of the flooring.

  10. Age of the Floor: Over time, even well-installed epoxy floors can degrade due to wear and tear, leading to eventual failure if not properly maintained.

Addressing these issues during installation and maintenance can significantly enhance the lifespan of epoxy floors.
