The Importance of Proper Epoxy Mixing: Lessons from a Healthcare Flooring Installation

SRI & Company recently tackled a challenging epoxy flooring project at a local hospital undergoing large-scale renovations. The facility had grappled with numerous issues with its existing epoxy floors, which caused significant headaches for the facilities manager and administrative staff.

From the outset of the project, the client sought to understand the root causes behind the previous installation's failures and needed assurance that we could deliver a high-performance epoxy floor system that could withstand the rigors of around-the-clock hospital operations. Our assessment of flooring issues in the receiving area, food and beverage storage, mailroom, and connecting corridors revealed signs that improper mixing was the likely culprit.

The importance of proper mixing in epoxy coatings cannot be overstated. A precise ratio of resin and hardener is required for the epoxy to cure properly, and these components must be evenly distributed in the mix for a good chemical bond. If inadequately mixed, the epoxy can remain soft, tacky, or inconsistently cured, making it vulnerable to premature wear, abrasion, and impact damage from heavy foot traffic and equipment.

Improper mixing also compromises the epoxy’s ability to adhere to the substrate properly, increasing the risk of delamination or peeling over time. It is less resistant to impacts, abrasions, and heavy traffic. Clear visual signs of inadequate mixing are streaking, color variations, and uneven textures. Conversely, overmixing can introduce air bubbles into the epoxy, resulting in an uneven, blemished finished surface once cured.

With decades of experience in commercial epoxy flooring installations, SRI & Co. ensures these systems are installed with exacting standards. This includes following strict protocols for proper substrate preparation, mixing, application, and curing to maximize adhesion and durability in demanding environments like healthcare facilities. With the hospital renovation project now completed, the facility can expect a durable and easy-to-maintain epoxy floor system for many years to come.
