SRI & Co. Discusses the Benefits of Polished Concrete Floors

One of SRI's main areas of expertise is polished concrete floors. Polished concrete flooring systems are becoming more and more popular each year in commercial and industrial environments due to their many advantages and relatively few disadvantages.

What is Polished Concrete?

The process of polishing concrete is one in which an existing concrete surface is mechanically ground down using progressively-finer diamond abrasives to achieve the desired level of sheen and smoothness. A penetrative sealer is applied during the process to harden the concrete and increase its density.

Benefits of Polished Concrete Floors

  • Low Costs – Polished concrete floors are relatively low in cost, long-lasting, and maintenance needs are minimal.

  • Low Maintenance – Polished concrete requires only vacuuming or microfiber mopping, and occasional damp mopping. No waxing, cleaning chemicals, or stripping treatments are necessary.

  • Slip Resistance – Despite their glossy appearance, polished concrete floors are highly slip-resistant when installed and maintained properly.

  • Stain Resistance – Densifying sealers applied during the polishing process resist forklift tire marks and prevent water, oil, chemicals, and other contaminants from penetrating the floor surface.

  • High Reflectivity and Lighting – Polished concrete floors are highly reflective, which amplifies natural light, reduces artificial lighting needs, increases safety, and helps lower energy costs.

  • Health and Sustainability – Polished concrete flooring utilizes existing surfaces, does not emit harmful VOCs, and requires no hazardous cleaners or coatings.
