Rubber Flooring Advantages and Disadvantages

Rubber flooring, which comes in tiles and sheet rolls, can be an excellent choice for many commercial applications, providing various benefits for fitness, educational, and healthcare facilities, to name a few. But like most flooring materials, the advantages are tempered by a few drawbacks. Here are a few things to take into account when considering rubber flooring.

Advantages of rubber flooring:

  • Strong, resilient, and durable. Withstands high-impact activity, high foot traffic, and heavy loads like hospital beds and rolling equipment.

  • High slip resistance. Provides a good grip for physical activities such as those in workout environments.

  • Comfortable and shock absorbent. Helps reduce fatigue and pain for workers who spend hours each day on their feet.

  • Good acoustics. Rubber floors absorb sound and reduce echoes in large open spaces.

  • Easy to clean and maintain.

Rubber flooring disadvantages:

  • The main drawback of rubber flooring is that upfront costs can be high. Over time, though, these expenses can be largely offset by long lifespan and lower maintenance costs.

  • Design options are somewhat limited in comparison to other flooring types.

  • Odor. New rubber flooring will emit a distinct rubbery smell that will take several weeks or months to fade away.
