Resilient Flooring Explained: Types and Installation Methods

Resilient flooring is a versatile category that encompasses a variety of flooring types such as LVT, LVP, VCT, rubber tiles, and sheet goods.

Vinyl Composition Tile

In the past, Vinyl Composition Tile (VCT) was the go-to choice for commercial spaces due to its durability. However, its maintenance demands, including regular applications of sealers and wax, make it labor-intensive to preserve its appearance and durability.

The Rise of LVT/LVP

In more recent times, VCT has taken a backseat as Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) and Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) have gained prominence. One of the key reasons for this shift is the cost-effectiveness of maintenance. Unlike VCT, LVT/LVP products come pre-sealed during manufacturing and permanently adhered to the goods, eliminating the need for additional coats of sealers and wax. This advantage has made LVT/LVP the preferred choice for many, especially in commercial settings.

LVT/LVP Installation

LVT and LVP, while different in shape, are essentially part of the same product group. Installation of these products is predicated on the specific LVT/LVP being used. Broadly speaking, installation methods fall into two categories, with manufacturers typically recommending the preferred type for their flooring:

1. Glue Down: This method involves gluing the product directly to the subfloor using an adhesive. The most common type is pressure-sensitive adhesive, which can be walked upon immediately after installation. This simplifies the process, especially when intricate layouts or patterns are involved. Alternatively, using wet-set adhesive for LVT/LVP is similar to the installation process for ceramic tiles. Wet-set glue must be properly cured before walking on the floor.

2. Loose-Lay (Floating): In this approach, vinyl planks or tiles are not glued down, but rather interlock with each other, creating a “floating” floor. This method offers flexibility and ease of replacement, making it a popular choice for various spaces and applications.

Sheet Vinyl and Rubber Flooring

Sheet vinyl follows a similar installation process as LVT/LVP, typically involving gluing or taping. Loose laying is rare and mainly reserved for residential spaces. It is often supplemented with perimeter gluing or focused adhesive application in high-traffic areas like doorways and corridors. Rubber goods, another resilient flooring option, also share similar installation methods.

Conclusion

The world of resilient flooring has evolved significantly, offering a range of options that cater to diverse needs. Whether it’s the classic durability of VCT, the modern convenience of LVT and LVP, or the versatility of rubber flooring, each material comes with its unique characteristics, installation methods, and advantages. As the industry continues to innovate, the choices available to consumers are broader than ever, making resilient flooring a reliable and adaptable solution for various environments.
