ESD Flooring: What Is It, Selection, and Installation

ESD flooring is a product that is specifically designed to protect valuable electronics from random electrostatic discharge. Static electricity is accumulated when people walk on flooring materials, and the rush of electrical current that occurs when a piece of sensitive electronic equipment is touched can cause extensive damage. ESD flooring helps prevent static charge accumulation and conducts it safely into the ground.

There are two main types of ESD floors, conductive and static dissipative, which are resistance categories used to describe the speed at which currents flow across or through the flooring material. The decision of whether to opt for one type over the other is highly dependent on the needs of the application and typically is specified by the designer.

ESD flooring is usually found in data centers, computer rooms, MDF and IDF rooms, medical facilities, laboratories, etc., but is frequently used in virtually any setting where electronic equipment is present. It comes in just about any material including vinyl, rubber, carpet, epoxy, etc. Conductive adhesives must be used and ESD floors must be properly grounded by the installing contractor.
